Secondhand sales increase as economy tanks

More consumers are now looking to save by buying secondhand goods rather than new ones as a result of the collapsing economy.

A number of retail franchises selling used goods and sports items nationwide have posted an increase in sales of secondhand products by 10 to 15 percent, reports Boston Metro.

"Every day now we're seeing people bring in bags and bags of equipment," says Mike Leivi, the owner of the Dedham franchise "Play It Again Sports" run by the Minneapolis-based Winmark Corporation. Winmark plans to open 30 more stores in Massachusetts in the next few years, as this may continue to be the trend with the struggling economy.

As consumers are trying to cope with the economic slump and the increase in the price of food and gasoline, the government is working towards bailing out Wall Street after incurring huge losses.

Dennis Keller of Cambridge Music, which is located in Porter Square, says that a larger proportion of his customers now choose to save on the purchase of new musical instruments by repairing their old ones. "Our repair guy is as busy as he wants to be," he adds.
