When do-it-yourself projects become a don't

As consumers look to cut unnecessary expenses out of their budgets, the number of do-it-yourself home improvements seem to be on the rise. Both Home Depot and Lowe's, two of the nation's largest home supply retailers, reported better than expected quarterly earnings.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, or NEISS, more than four million injuries related to home improvement projects result in emergency room visits each year. That number could be on the rise with more people unfamiliar with repair work attempting do-it-yourself projects.

"We’ve been seeing a lot of musculoskeletal problems from people lifting heavy things, maybe moving or doing things they’re not accustomed to,” Dr. Peter Lamelas, who operates urgent care centers around Palm Beach, Fla. tells the New York Times. “A lot of back injuries, shoulder injuries. Lacerations all the time.”

Even seemingly innocuous tools like ladders and lawn and garden equipment account for more than 350,000 emergency room visits annually. Some of the most common mistakes people make, according to NEISS, are climbing onto the top rungs of ladders or failing to check for debris that could be thrown into the air by lawnmowers.

Other projects, particularly those related to electrical wiring or plumbing, are risky not only because they can cause injuries, but also because mistakes can be very expensive to correct. Even though it may seem worthwhile to forgo professional help, a trip to the hospital or a bill for emergency repairs is probably going to be more expensive and certainly more of a hassle than calling in someone who works in the field.

Walt Disney opens exhibit offering financial lessons

Even Disney World has begun offering up lessons on financial responsibility to some of its youngest visitors. Earlier this week, an exhibit called "The Great Piggy Bank Adventure" opened at the Epcot theme park.

Sponsored by Disney’s affiliate T. Rowe Price, the exhibit aims to teach 8- to 13-year-old kids some of the basic principles of saving and spending.

Although the current economic downturn has made most people more conscious of their financial habits, the timing of the opening of the exhibit is a little bit of good luck. Disney and T. Rowe Price began planning for "The Great Piggy Bank Adventure in 2006," well before the economy showed signs of decline.

"It is sort of a timeless topic but now you realize it's even more important," says Meredith Callanan, T. Rowe Price's director of corporate marketing.

Visitors participate in the exhibit by playing a game that allows them to set goals to pay for expenses relevant to the “tween” group Disney is trying to target. They can choose between setting aside money to redecorate their room or start saving for college, for example.

Players, represented by thrifty pigs, must hide money so the game’s villain, the reckless wolf, won’t steal it. The wolf also has the ability to raise inflation which highlights the importance of saving early.

Once visitors get home, they can continue practicing the financial lessons they learned at the exhibit’s Web site and parents can read more about "The Great Piggy Bank Adventure."

Twitter says 'no' to advertisements

Online advertisements are a way many Web start-ups can earn revenue, while keeping their membership free. Twitter, an extremely fast-growing microblogging service, is saying "no" to advertisements.

Why is Twitter turning away from ads? Biz Stone, co-founder of Twitter, says "There are a few reasons why we're not pursuing advertising -- one is it's just not quite as interesting to us." Secondly, he points out that ads are very likely to annoy users when placed alongside messages.

Twitter is a venture-capital backed company and is only two years old. Although Twitter is seeking ways to earn revenue from its popularity, Stone says the company is not under any pressure to earn money in the near future.

A recent Reuters article reports that at Twitter's current growth rate, they are set to have double-employment by this year's end. Users jumped 83% from March to April this year.

What will Twitter turn to instead? Twitter is focusing on add-on tools for professional and business users. Stone says that some tools will be introduced by year end. The development of new features for commercial users is also a current focus such as "lightweight analytics" and a directory of commercial accounts. Agreements with cell phone carriers are in talks -- in order to make sure Twitter works on their text messaging networks.

Credit card industry under scrutiny by Congress

As the economic downturn continues to put a strain on household finances, some credit card industry practices have come under increased scrutiny. Interest rates around 30 percent, late and over-limit fees, and reduced credit limits make paying bills on time increasingly difficult for consumers.

Last week, members of Congress held a news conference to discuss legislation that will address measures designed to curb some of these aggressive lending tactics.

The bill, currently proposed in the Senate, would tighten restrictions on card companies' ability to raise interest rates and on their ability to market cards to people under age 21. It also requires that statements be delivered three weeks before bills are due and provide more notice before changing rates.

“We like credit cards — they are valuable vehicles for many people,” Christopher Dodd, chairman of the Senate banking committee, said at the news conference. “It’s when these vehicles are being abused by the card issuers at the expense of the consumers that we must step in and change the rules.”

The legislation has support from both Democrats and Republicans in the Senate, and the House already passed a less-stringent version on the bill that will enact similar limitations. President Obama also called for change in the credit card industry several times since taking office.

The measure currently under consideration in the Senate does not include any mention of capping interest rates, and some reformers say that consumers will not receive adequate protection until rate caps are enacted. As it stands, however, the measure seems to have widespread support and is expected to pass easily.

Online travel sites 'woo' customers with savings

This year is not about the stay-cation. Customers are tightening their purse strings fueling online travel companies to lower their prices. They're also "woo-ing" their customers with elaborate marketing schemes.

In a survey by Kayak.com, an online travel company, 95 percent of over 4,100 participants say they plan to take a vacation this summer. Brian Harniman, executive vice president of marketing and distribution says “Thanks to an abundance of travel deals, last year’s stay-cation trend appears to be over as we’re seeing consumers using savvy cost-saving strategies to once again embark on a traditional summer vacation.”

What are these savvy cost-saving strategies? Customers are shopping around online, using their buying power to find the greatest deal on their summer vacation. The average customer savings of booking a hotel online is only $7 a night, and online travel companies feel the pinch. Online companies are fighting for travellers by use ads and promotions.

Priceline.com (an online travel company), features William Shatner in advertisements as the "negotiatior." Shatner encourages customers to "haggle" online for better deals. Meanwhile, a clerk in the advertisement drops the price from $299 to $99. Shatner's response? A racy line, "You're so naughty." Travel sites such as Orbitz, Expedia, and Travelocity have slashed service fees. TNS Media Intelligence reports that Expedia spent $139 million on advertisements last year. Regardless, MSNBC reports Expedia.com's 1st quarter net income fell 20 percent, and their revenue fell 7.6 percent.

Price "assurance" promotions have been picked up by most online travel companies. If you book a flight or a hotel at Orbitz and find someone who has booked a lower price, Orbitz will cut you a check for the difference. Spokesman Brian Hoyt says he would "rather spend our money on our customers than buy ads on "American Idol"."

With online companies set to "woo" customers despite of the economy, travellers have the buying power for this summer's vacation.

Savvy consumers shop online for auto insurance

A new report released by internet researcher comScore shows that nearly two thirds of consumer respondents went online to get quotes the last time they shopped for auto insurance.

The second most popular option, which is calling a local agent, represents the behavior of just 25 percent of those surveyed. Just as shopping for retail products online can save time and money, shopping for auto insurance on the internet is quickly becoming an effective solution for consumers.

“As with many important purchases, the online channel is often the first place consumers go to research auto insurance prices,” Kevin Levitt, comScore vice president, says in a statement.

Most companies respond to online requests for quotes with an e-mail or phone call within a day, and sometimes much faster. As a result, shoppers can easily compare coverages and prices and make the decision to purchase insurance within a short period of time.

However, the comScore study does show that even though about two thirds of shoppers who purchased insurance in the past six months first looked for auto insurance quotes online, only about 30 percent actually purchased their insurance over the internet. Just over half bought their insurance from an agent.

The latest numbers from comScore illustrate an evolution in online shopping trends because out of respondents who purchased their insurance coverage five or more years ago, only four percent did so online. 72 percent of those who shopped five or more years ago ultimately bought their insurance from an agent compared to 52 percent of recent shoppers.

Companies use Twitter for customer service

Ever get a bill for twice as much as you thought, only to spend 20 minutes on hold trying to fix it? Or have a cable service outage as your favorite team goes into overtime?

We’ve all had these experiences, but as the Internet community grows, consumers are finding power in their voices, and sometimes, more specifically, their tweets.

Comcast’s Frank Eliason is taking customer service to a whole new level, monitoring Twitter’s social networking site for complaints concerning Comcast’s telecom services. The over 2.3 million Twitter users post thousands of complaints a year, usually “tweeting” about a service outage or a frustrating customer service experience.

Eliason, or ComcastCares, is quick to respond, often starting with the simple acknowledgment of a problem. Within minutes, Eliason generally contacts the frustrated consumer via Twitter and then schedules the necessary service calls. Instead of being on hold getting angrier, the client’s concern is handled immediately, preventing other such tweets from disgruntled consumers flooding his, and other potential consumers, screens.

With the Internet becoming a powerful source of viral consumer reviews, companies have no choice but respond and improve their service before the power of word of mouth (or tweet in this case) destroys them. Comcast, and companies like it, that are suffering from an onslaught of complaints, are not only improving their service by instant notification of outages, but also the customer experience.

It’s a win-win situation for both the business and the consumer. Check out other sites like Consumer Reports and Angie's List for reviews before you buy and to voice your consumer complaints to get the service you deserve.

Don't clean your HDTV with Windex

If you clean your HDTV with Windex. .. stop. Your flat-screen TV may be in trouble.

Cleaning an HDTV with Windex? You're not alone. It's very common to clean household electronics with Windex or a common cleaner. These cleaners are full of ammonia and alcohol, and will most likely ruin your plasma screen, according to Consumer Reports.

Before you begin to clean in time for Mother's Day, be sure to read your HDTV's cleaning instructions. Certain chemicals are sure to be prohibited. Using the certain chemicals is bound to void your product's warranty.

Some cleaning kits cost a lot of money, for a lot of nothing. Best Buy offers a cleaning kit for $20, while Amazon offers a cleaning kit for a much better price of $8.99.

What's the best method? Use a microfiber cloth damp with water. The cost? $4. The water won't harm the screen in any way, and the microfiber cloth will not scratch unlike a paper towel or cleaning rag.
