Heating oil prices are half of what they were last fall. Why are so many stuck paying the hiked-up prices?
There's good news for consumers regarding heating oil rates. The Energy Administration announced national prices for March 2009 as low as $2.22; the lowest price since 2005. July 2008 prices were as high as $4.71.
The recession has caused oil prices to fall dramatically, which is good news for those living on a budget. However, some consumers dependent on heating oil are still paying last fall's prices. Fearing that heating oil prices would continue to climb, many consumers opted for a locked-in rate. Ken Glasser locked in at $4 a gallon last August to heat his Boston home. He had his friends and family join in on the fixed-rate. "Some years you're the dog and some years you're the hydrant," Glasser reports to NPR.
The locked in contracts are extremely difficult to break, most requiring a a large termination fee. Buyers remorse is a current theme among fixed-rate customers. In the past decade, fixed-rate customers have made out better than month-to-month customers. Unfortunately, a contract is a contract. Jim Colloura of the New England Fuel Institute says"It was offered as a service to the customer. It was no malicious intent here. … I think this is a learning curve for everybody."
This year's locked in prices are set to be around $2.50, a lot better than last year's. In any case, it is highly unlikely that heating oil prices will come close to last fall's average.

Savings 101: Save water, save money
By making just a few small changes to your daily routine, you can cut down on your utilities bills and your carbon footprint. The average American household uses over 900 kWh of electricity every month, so even simple modifications can make a big difference over time.
Start by washing your clothes in cool water. According to the California Energy Commission, almost 90 percent of the cost of washing clothes comes from heating the water that fills the washing machine. As long as clothes don't have grease stains, they will generally come out as clean in cool water as they would in hot water.
A major cost of running the dishwasher is the energy needed to heat the water to dry the dishes. If you turn off the steam dry feature on your dishwasher, you'll save a significant portion of the cost that it would typically take to run each cycle. By keeping the door of the dishwasher closed tightly for about 20 minutes after the cycle stops, the heat generated by washing the dishes will continue to dry them even though the dishwasher is no longer running. Before putting the dishes away, lightly dry them with a towel or let the dishwasher door stand open and allow the dishes to air dry.

Buyer's market: Is now the time to rent or buy?
For those looking to enter the market, current economic conditions may make buying a home a long term, cost-effective alternative to renting.
The large number of homes for sale, coupled with incentives such as the new First Time Home Buyers tax credit, could give buyers the opportunity to save thousands of dollars. Taking a conservative approach to borrowing and the new first time home buyers' tax credit may put current buyers in an even better position. A credit of up to $8,000 is available on homes purchased between January 1 and December 1, 2009 for qualified buyers who earn less than $75,000 filing alone or less than $150,000 filing jointly.
The large number of homes for sale and the new tax incentive give some buyers the opportunity to save tens of thousands of dollars. The National Association of Realtors' latest figures indicate that existing home sales fell almost 9 percent from January '08 to January '09. Across the country, single family home prices fell about 19 percent from December '07 to December '08. Although prices have decreased dramatically, tightened lending standards may require some buyers to make larger down payments than in the past. Lower mortgage rates, however, could ease the pain. The average par rate on a 30-year mortgage dropped below the five percent mark in mid-March.
Potential buyers can use this opportunity to make a smart purchase and avoid common pitfalls that contributed to the trouble that some home owners are in right now. One piece of advice to keep in mind is to avoid buying more house than you need. The current market has illustrated that speculating in real estate can be risky, so it may make sense to buy a house that you would be willing to live in for at least a few years.
In addition, buyers should be realistic about how much of their monthly income they can devote to costs associated with housing. A practical rule of thumb suggests that buyers should spend no more than 30 percent of their gross monthly income on mortgage payments, taxes, and insurance. Spending more than 30 percent could make it difficult to have enough left over to cover other expenses.

Inside Consumer United :: Brendan Fallon
Brendan Fallon works full time as a Consumer United advocate, helping the average person save money on basic services.
Working at Consumer United, Fallon enjoys interacting with a group of intelligent and motivated young co-workers who believe in what they do, and the goals of the company. "It's refreshing to work with people who care about their jobs and the consumers we help," he says.
How does Fallon save money? "I try to save money by enjoying many of the free activities in and around Boston. Nothing beats a concert or movie at the half shell during the summer." He also shops at clearance sales, but makes sure never to buy anything at first sight. Fallon frequently checks up on products online in order to take advantage of sales.
What is Fallon's favorite personal finance advice? "Finance is all about balance. Yes, you should save for the future but not to the extremes that cut into the quality of life you live. It is important to be prepared for retirement, but you should also have fun along the way."
A Boston University graduate, Fallon enjoys visiting museums, reading the New Yorker, watching VH1 reality television and taking advantage of Boston's night life.

Survey says prepaid phones are gaining popularity
The weakened economy is causing many Americans to take a hard look at their budgets, and a recently released survey by the New Millennium Research Council suggests that their monthly cellphone bill is one of the primary expenses people are trying to reduce. Over 60 million consumers are likely to eliminate some of their cell phones services and features if the economy continues to worsen, according to the survey of about 2,000 respondents.
In the last six months, about 15 percent of those polled have decided to eliminate extras such as internet connectivity and text messaging. An additional 40 percent of respondents who currently have these features replied that it is somewhat or very likely that they would get rid of these extras if the economy continued to decline.
Allen Hepner, a scholar with New Millennium Research Council, said in a statement that “The era of cell phone penny pinching is officially here. Thanks to the recession, the U.S. cell phone marketplace is undergoing fundamental changes that will just get bigger as the economic downturn deepens. What we see in these survey findings is clear evidence that most consumers will keep a cell phone during this recession, but only after shifting to less expensive cell phone plans, such as prepaid, and also by scaling back on cell phone extras...”
Prepaid plans have become more popular with consumers who are trying to cut costs because they require very little commitment which is often attractive when finances are uncertain. Over sixty percent of respondents with prepaid phones believe they are saving money compared to what they were paying for a contract-based or land line plan. The Telecommunications Research & Action Center, a non-profit education and advocacy organization, has also recently emphasized that many consumers could reduce their monthly bills by switching to prepaid phone service.

Save energy while cooking pasta in less water
What if you could save money while cooking pasta? Would you alter your method?
Harold McGee, New York Times writer has altered his pasta cooking method and has found the savings to be significant.
McGee conducted an unscientific experiment and found major energy savings by cooking pasta in only two cups of water, instead of four-to-six quarts of water per pound of pasta. He writes, "Why boil so much more water than pasta actually absorbs, only to pour it down the drain?"
McGee's findings? Cooking spaghetti in a few cups of water multiplied by a billion pounds of pasta consumed by Americans each year, could add up.
In fact, a few trillion B.T.U.s. ( a unit of energy equal to the work done by a power of 1000 watts operating for one hour) could be saved at the stove top alone. In relation to the power plant, this translates to 250,000 to 500,000 barrels of oil, or $10 to $20 million given current prices.
C'mon, do you really need all of that water to boil pasta?

Will ZillionTV change the world?
What is ZillionTV ... and will it change the world?
The soon-to-be launched ZillionTV is a cable and satellite alternative that will allow consumers to watch free Internet video directly on their TV screens. A small set-top-box device named "Z-bar" connects your television set to the internet and is bringing together the entire digital media ecosystem -- including consumers, content owners, advertisers and ISPs.
You do not need to pay for a membership, or a subscription. For a $50 activation fee, you will receive a special remote, and the "Z-bar" device. However, commercials are included. A small fee enables you to watch commercial-free. For a little more money you can even own the show.
Mitch Berman, CEO and founder of ZillionTV has 27 years of experience in the television entertainment industry, speaks of ZillionTV. "It is about a multidimensional ecosystem grounded in partnerships. It is about a new business model. Thus, based on creating partnerships and a new business ecosystem, ZillionTV is literally changing the world and forming a new industry paradigm."
ZillionTV has already created partnerships with 20th Century Fox Television, Disney, Sony Pictures and Warner Bros. Digital Distribution.
ZillionTV still has a long way to go. The service is set to begin the last quarter of 2009, but will only be available through Internet Service Providers.

Economic downturn fuels travel bargains
The weakening economy has caused many travelers to think twice about booking their next trip, and the tourism industry is feeling the pinch.
Airlines and hotels are struggling to attract customers, but the good news is that the tough times can translate into big savings for those willing to travel in this market. Due to the strengthening dollar and decreased business travel, some previously pricey destinations have become a bargain.
Europe, and Great Britain in particular, could be a great alternative to a typical summer beach vacation. In the past year, the dollar has gained about 25% against the Euro and more than 40% against the British pound. Transatlantic airlines are also scrambling to fill seats, so travelers can get especially good deals if they're willing to fly at off-peak times or sit through a layover or two.
Traveling by train through Europe can also be significantly less expensive than rail travel in the US, so instead of paying for hotels, travelers can take overnight trains to cover more ground and maximize their vacation time.
Popular business travel destinations such as Las Vegas are also experiencing decreased traffic as corporations participate in fewer conferences and training sessions.
In addition, many destinations that are popular with business travelers also happen to be warm weather locales. Las Vegas and Palm Beach or Fort Lauderdale, for example, are often less busy during the summer, even in good times. By combining airfare and a hotel stay, bargain-hunting travelers can take advantage of off-season package deals.

Landline customers are cutting the cord
When it comes to your landline, You may want to ... cut it out.
In 2007, cellular phones accounted for 55% of all telephone expenses, where landlines only accounted for 43%, according to a recent report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. And the younger the consumer, the more money is spent on cellular expenses. Children don't even think about forking over cash a landline. Not when one can easily talk for free on Skype, or be reached via cellphone with ease.
Landlines still trump cellular phones in terms of quality in some areas of the U.S. Features, such as speed dialing are better on landlines. However, cellular phones may soon be up to speed, leaving limited reasons for consumers not to go cellular.
In developing regions in China, India and Africa, the landline is being skipped over completely. Everyone who can afford line in India can afford a cellphone, because call plans are the lower than the norm. Low calling charges and cheap phones which is resulting in meteoric growth.
Forrester Research, a Cambridge based firm finds that saving money is the primary motivation for cutting the landline cord.
There are many services that optimize the savings. Skype offers a worldwide calling subscription from $9.95 a month. C-NET reports that T-Mobile is trying out an unlimited calling $50 a month plan, initially to customers in San Francisco. For family savings, AT&T offers add-a-line service for only $9.99 a month.
MetroPCS offers a very reasonable plan- at $40 a month, local, long distance, text messaging and voice mail are included. There is no limit on the amount of minutes that may be used per month. The disadvantage is that MetroPCS has very limited service, although over 300 cities have coverage.

Google launches tip-driven savings community
As consumers become increasingly interested in finding resources that will help them save money and time, Google has launched a Web community that also users to post and vote on money and time-saving tips. The site, known as TipJar, already has thousands of tips in easy to navigate categories such as finance, health, technology, kids, family and several others.
Users can submit tips by logging in with their Gmail account information or by creating an account. Other users vote on whether they like or dislike a particular tip. Savings suggestions with the most votes appear at the top of each category's homepage. Google enforces a 250 character limit on each tip to ensure that they are short and sweet, allowing users to read through and vote on many tips quickly.
TipJar is supported by Google Moderator, a tool that offers other community posting sites such as “Ask a World Leader” and “Ask a Google Engineer.” Users can post questions and the community votes on their favorites, pushing questions with the most votes to the top of each page.
When submitting a tip, users post a name and a location. However, most of the locations are actually Web sites. This illustrates an interesting side benefit of the way that TipJar has harnessed the power of leveraging collective knowledge. Not only can users read the most popular tips, they can also visit the Web sites, many of which are dedicated to saving money, to track down even more information.
Americasaves.org, for example, is a group that represents a coalition of organizations that encourages all households to save, regardless of age or income level. By reading the tips authored by Americasaves.org, users of TipJar are exposed to the resources the site provides.

Latest model Ford Hybrid offers 40 MPG
As consumers becoming increasingly concerned with making environmentally and financially responsible responsible purchases, Ford may have a captive market for its retooled 2010 Fusion Hybrid. The car has a fuel efficiency rating of 41 miles per gallon and can reach cruising speeds of 47 MPH relying solely on electric power. Although Ford has unveiled the new model as part of the 2010 collection, the latest model of the car goes on sale shortly, in early spring 2009.
The 2010 Ford Fusion received positive reviews at the LA Auto Show in November where it was one of just five cars to be considered finalists for the 2009 Green Car of the Year Award.
Going against the trend set by other American automakers, Ford has decided to release the car with two other updated models, the Taurus and the Transit Connect van. In order to try to shore up their financial situations, other automakers such as General Motors and Chrystler have cut their new product development.
Ford may also be benefiting from how little it has been in the news lately. As the sole member of the so-called big three trio American automakers that has not accepted federal bailout money, Ford's financial situation has not been subjected to the same kind of publicity as the other companies. Although G.M. and Chrystler have already received about $18 billion from the government, they are asking for an additional $21 billion. Ford, however, has managed to avoid seeking bailout money.
