Prepaid cellphone plans gain popularity

Many consumers are looking to cut as many expenses as possible out of their budgets, and the long-term cellphone contract seems to be the next casualty. Once the plan of choice for shifty characters who wanted to change their phone numbers frequently, prepaid options are rapidly gaining popularity with frugal shoppers.

Providers are also offering a variety of choices that make prepaid plans more attractive to consumers. Some plans allow customers to buy one-time-use cards in increments of $25 or $50 dollars, for example, and the balance is debited as calls are made or text messages are sent.

Other plans resemble the more traditional long-term contracts. Customers pay a monthly fee for a predetermined service plan, but they pay up front and the agreement is only month to month.

As the popularity of these services has increased, so too has the selection of phones and other hardware that accompany the prepaid plans. A major difference between choosing a long-term contract and a prepaid plan is that prepaid customers often have to pay for the phones themselves. To entice customers to sign on often for several years at a time, providers have traditionally offered phones for free. Over time, however, a prepaid plan plus the purchase price of a phone could still be more cost-effective than a long-term contract.

Prepaid contracts may also be a welcome vehicle for growth for the wireless industry. According to CTIA, a wireless trade group representing wireless communication providers, wireless penetration reached 85% in the United States as of June 2008.

Additionally, The New York Times reports that over half of the customers T-Mobile added in the fourth quarter of 2008 were prepaid customers. In some metropolitan areas such as Boston, providers such as MetroPCS are entering the market offering only prepaid plans.

Inside Consumer United :: Peter Richardson

Peter Richardson is our newest Consumer United advocate, helping the average person save money. Richardson enjoys his job because of the people and the general office environment. "It's fun because it's a young office with a lot of positive energy," he says.

How does Richardson save money? "I save money by taking a portion of my paycheck and investing it on a monthly basis into a mutual fund," he adds. Richardson believes in investing early, in order to be financially independent when it's time to retire.

When not at Consumer United, Richardson likes to relax and play video games. He is an avid sports fan and is a member of a few fantasy sports leagues. Before Consumer United, Richardson worked in the trades received room at Brown Brothers, and was a Financial Service Specialist at ICM AIG Financial Advisors.

TrialPay can help you get freebies online

Like free stuff? You're in luck.

With the economy in the dumps, you might hesitate before buying non-essential goodies like video games or pizza. But what if you could get those things for free by doing something you might already be inclined to do — like signing up for a trial of Netflix or getting a free subscription to TurboTax?

Here's how it works: Let's say you're perusing a movie ticket Web site like Fandango.com. If that site is working with TrialPay, you might be presented with the chance to get tickets not by paying for them directly, but simply by completing a purchase or trial offer with another company. If you're game, you can click to see a list of participating companies, such as Netflix.

As TrialPay's 27-year-old co-founder, Alex Rampell, describes it to the Associated Press, the service is "kind of like PayPal for people who don't pay."

Savings 101: Time to cut out your cable?

Is it time to cut out your cable?

A $70 a month cable bill adds up to $840 a year. That's a nice chunk of cash that could be stashed in the bank, if you're willing to deal with minor buffering issues.

If you do cut your cable, where do you go? Hulu offers free commercial-supported TV shows and movies from NBC, FOX, and many others. Netflix sends you DVDs by mail, and as a bonus streams selected movies via the Internet. You can try Netflix for free, and it's then only $4.99 a month with no late fees. For shows not on Hulu, most of the major networks offer free viewings online. You can also download movies and watch them immediately from iTunes and Amazon, for a small fee.

Cutting your cable may be a money and time saver. Karen Lubensky, switched from cable and uses NetFlix. What does Karen find? "The savings are tremendous. My husband and I watch a lot of movies from Netflix, and I find more time to read, and go to the gym. I now take a sewing class once a week, something I wouldn't have had the money or time for. "

We recommend giving it a try... Maybe cable is something you won't end up missing after all.

Amtrak's Acela Express train offers deep discounts

Amtrak is temporarily slashing fares on its high-speed Acela Express service in response to the sagging economy, which has driven ridership to an all-time low on its Northeastern Corridor between Boston and Washington D.C.

The company is offering a 25-percent price reduction its lowest one-way fares starting Tuesday, March 3.

Travelers will now be able to book business-class tickets on its high-end Acela Express between Boston and New York for as low as $79 and between Washington and New York for $99. The tickets must be booked 14 days in advance. They are nonrefundable, though they can be exchanged.

Previously, the lowest one-way fare between Boston and New York was $93, while the trip between Washington and New York cost $133.

In the four-month period since the end of Amtrak’s last fiscal year, from October to January, the number of travelers dropped 10.3 percent.

And the decline may be accelerating. Ridership this past January was 13.8 percent lower than it was in January 2008.

“As Amtrak becomes an increasingly popular way to travel, these new low fares on Acela make our flagship service more affordable for business and leisure travelers,” Emmett Fremaux, vice president of marketing and product management, says in a press release.

Gas prices continue to drop dramatically

Oil prices continue to fall amidst Senate's passage of Obama's $838 billion recovery plan.

With Government plans in place to improve our dis-heartened economy, The Dow Jones industrials lost 300 points and crude is still trading below $40 a barrel. Alaran Trading Corp Analyst, Phil Flynn, says "People are running to gold as a reaction to Monday's speech and are running away from the stock market. And of course that's pressuring the oil down."

Associated Press reports that a new Treasury Department program will make more loans available to consumers and businesses. Funding would be up from $20 billion to $100 billion, administration officials report. Although things could be looking better, nothing has been set in stone.

Despite recent Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries cuts, there is still plenty of oil in the market due to our weakened economy. Platts, the energy information arm of McGraw-Hill Cos. reports that by Wednesday, U.S. crude stocks could grow to 30.4 million barrels. Motorists however, will not see these savings. Retail prices at the pump will continue to rise. Sinking demand is causing refiners to trim down production. Gas prices have risen 13.6 cents since last month.

The good news? Gas is still less expensive than last summer.

Consumers get frugal for Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day splurging is so last year.

The current recession and a loss of more than 2 million jobs has made home-cooked candlelit dinners, handmade cards and a bit of creativity all the rage. Don't expect diamonds or special-delivery flowers this year.

According to Brand Keys in New York, a brand and customer loyalty consulting company, Valentine's Day spending is expected to decrease about 15% this year. This year's special day will fall on a Saturday, leaving florists in the dirt. No one will be ordering flowers for the office.

For those still set to celebrate a night out, hotels and restaurants are lowering prices and are offering special discounts and promotions. The Associated Press reports The Ruth's Chris Steak House is offering a special three-course meal, called "Ruth's Classics". The price? $40, much less than last year's $150 special for two or the average $75 dinner check. A three-star hotel in Miami's South Beach will be $136, and a three-star hotel in New York's trendy SoHo will be $96. Mark Lomanno, president of Smith Travel Research shows this holiday weekend is set to bring in an additional $250 in U.S. hotel revenue.

What else is a consumer to do? Get creative. The Star Tribune reports Ruth Hayden, a Twin Cities-based financial educator is picking another day in order to save money. She wants to celebrate, and is going to beat the system.

Save on a batch of home-related tax breaks

With Wednesday, April 15 looming large on the horizon and more and more Americans looking to make the most of every dollar, there are a few tax tips that could help save hundreds this spring.

Homeowners in particular are well-positioned to take advantage of these tax tips.

For example, homeowners are eligible for an additional standard deduction off of the standard deduction for property taxes. Single filers are eligible for a $500 deduction and $1000 for couples. This could make it more advantageous for some to take the standard deduction instead of itemizing deductions.

Another beneficial new provision is the first-time homebuyers' credit which allows the homeowners to take up to a $7,500 credit against their income taxes in the year of purchase. The purchase must be made between April 9, 2008 and July 1, 2009. The best part is that to take the credit, it does not have to be the very first time a buyer has owned a home. To take the credit, the buyer must not have had an ownership interest in a home over the course of the three years prior to the purchase of the home.

Contributing to I.R.A.'s can also lessen a taxpayer's responsibility, and beginning in 2008, the maximum contribution increased to $5,000. The maximum amount increases by $1,000 for individuals who will be 50 by the end of the year. If you're running behind schedule, contributions made until April 15th 2009 will count toward 2008.

For more information and to ensure that you're not missing out on any tax breaks, visit the IRS site here for individuals. Also, TurboTax Online Federal Free Edition lets you file federal taxes online – FREE!

New consumer emerges in economic downturn

Today's tough economy has created a new consumer.

The U.S. consumer of 2009 has adopted new behaviors. The U.S. Commerce Dept reports that consumer spending in December was down for the sixth month in a row. The month's consumer spending is down 1%, while income is down only .2%. Energy prices are at an all time low, leaving cash in everyone's pockets.
What does this mean? More savings. This is due to the rising risk of unemployment, cut in hours and the decrease in home prices. The risks and uncertainties of today's economy are prompting Americans to hold on to their money. Historically low interest rates are enabling many to refinance their home. The Christian Science Monitor reports that Beth Byrne, a Boston-area resident, saves around $200 a month from a home refinance. She isn't planning on spending this money soon, either. The money is staying in the bank.

When is the U.S. consumer of 2009 going to rebound? Many economists feel the end of 2009 will boast a trend of increased spending, however, there is high uncertainty. A Diageo/Hotline poll in late January reveals 43% of Americans believe it will take between 2-4 years in order to get the economy back on track. President Obama agrees that the economy will take years to restore.

A rise in consumer confidence will ultimately increase spending. Tax cuts proposed by a stimulus plan in Congress will ultimately help reduce the decline in employment, and anything in place to help stop the decline in home prices will restore consumer confidence. Bank recovery policies that anticipate an end in the economic recession will increase investor's sentiment, thus increasing consumer confidence as well.
